Day 1 Saturday: Classroom and Pool
- Classroom: 8am-1pm (at Spear America Costa Mesa)
Day 2 Sunday: Ocean Training (Catalina)
- 7am meet time for ferry, return at approximately 6pm.

About
Whether a complete beginner or an informally trained freediver/spearfisherman with years of experience, this course will set you on the right path to eliminate bad habits and show you the most efficient and safe freedive techniques. During this course, students train the fundamentals of the FII education system in an easy-to-learn course format operating between the classroom, pool and open water setting. With a high emphasis on freedive safety training and technique development, students master the proper skills to effectively freedive up to depths of 66 feet/20 meters.
Prerequisites
-Competent swimming skills and comfortable in open water
-Participants must be 16 years or older
-Equipment: Wetsuit, mask, snorkel, long blade fins, weight belt, weights and timing device
3 Steps to Certification
Step 1: In person classroom session
Step 2: Pool training (same day as classroom)
Step 3: Ocean training
And that's it! you're certified!
Duration
Day 1:
-Classroom Session: 8am-1pm - Spear America, Costa Mesa
-Pool Session: 2pm-5pm - Location TBD
Day 2:
-Ocean Session: Take the ferry to Avalon to Casino Point Dive Park at Catalina.
All day experience. Times may vary. Approximate schedule is 7am-5pm.
Ferry ticket is not included in the price of the class. Please communicate with your instructor so they may book the ticket for you and take payment or you may book the ticket individually for yourself.
Gear
Students can purchase or rent gear at Spear America at least 1 day prior to their scheduled classroom session. Students receive discounts on gear purchases. Proper gear is extremely important to your safety and success for this course. We do not allow bodyboarding, surfing, snorkeling or scuba gear to be used for this course. Unsure if your gear is appropriate for the class? Email us photos of your gear at info@spearamerica.com and we can double check it for you!

Cruised into Costa Mesa Spear America and was greeted with reggae and good vibes. Ethan helped me out a ton. He helped me find a dice float and left with a wealth of wisdom passed down to me by a decade of spear fishing experience. Not only is this a small business which is the foundation of the USA but the customer service cannot be beat. Prices are not the cheapest out there, but a great value for the quality of product you purchase. Overall, I’m a lifelong customer. Eric is the best instructor, he is patient and answers all our questions.
My son did this course and he really liked the experience. He already started spear fishing but needed the correct breathing techniques and confidence to go deeper. Eric , his instructor is very qualified and he felt very safe all the time. We can only recommend this course and I am sure we will be back for more courses.
